Review: Levy's Gig Bag (1995 top-of-the-line)

Construction: 7.5/10 - Pretty good, overall. The plastic hardware could be better.
Convenience: 9/10 - a few different strap configurations made life super easy.
Protection: 8/10 - soft padding feels comfy, may not offer best high-impact protection.

I'm definitely a gig bag person. Once I got used to slinging my electric over a shoulder, I quickly realized that for everyday local use, there's no other way to go. The Levy's bag is a reasonably well-made unit that provides good protection without going overboard on cost.

After 5 years of use, my Levy's gig bag was still highly serviceable, though as with many other items, accumulated use began to highlight a few flaws, and I was reminded that ultimately, you do get what you pay for.

The padding is soft and thick. In 5 years of heavy use, I never experienced any damage to a bass while it was in the gig bag.

We've all experienced zipper failure, and need little reminding of how lame it is. On the Levy's bag, the main oversized YKK zipper is definitely up to the task! On the bottom, below the strap button, it started getting flattened after several years of bagging my bass without taking off the strap locks. Eventually, I sealed that spot with epoxy to prevent it from compromising the rest of the zipper. It was still a long way from giving out, and the rest of the zipper shows absolutely no signs of ever wanting to get stuck or come undone. Very nice.

My main complaint would be the plastic hoops and latches. You've got to keep your eye on them. They never busted on me, but the latches did snap out of the loops on a few occasions, resulting in a tumble. Not good. (Fortunately, the thick padding did it's job and prevented any damage to my bass.) I appreciate the price point; honest, I do, but in terms of using plastic hardware, that's one corner I wish they hadn't cut.

The stitching held up on the strap hooks, where it really counts. On the small top compartment, the stitching on the bottom eventually came undone, to the point where it was no longer safe to try and stow allen wrenches up there. A spare set of strings still fits snugly and thus is in little danger of ever slipping out. The larger lower compartment is still 100% all systems go, and it's perfectly suitable for cords, tuners, straps, tools and the likes.

Overall, I would characterize the Levy's as being on the upper end of the medium quality spectrum. With the plastic hardware and weak stitching in spots, it's not quite built for a career's worth of full-time pro use. It is, however, a vast improvement over the cheaper gig bags that will let you down much worse, much sooner. It's a nice effective compromise for those who need something real, but can't quite justify spending top dollar on the bag of a lifetime.
